A couple of weeks ago we had a complete shocker. Our location was horribly compromised… but it wasn’t horrible. Our problem was that we needed a big open space where we could reveal characters behind other characters and depth is always good in shots to give you a sense of a character’s place in the scene. As a result everything happened on one very slim plane of action and there was no room to show a lively bar, and give a sense of the world around them. Last weekend we reshot the scenes in a new bar and I thought it’d be interesting to post comparative shots to give an idea of why on earth we did it. Obviously with no way of judging performance it’s hard to know which plays better but just judging the shots, which do you prefer?

Haha, I think you got me confused with Stu Maschwitz. That guy has a lot more cred than I ever will in the blogosphere, and the post is still active if you’re interested. He’s taken some shit for what he said, but that’s mainly because people didn’t actually read the post properly. A gentle ribbing is all well and good for the guys he talks about, including himself. I regularly call myself a moron, because I am one most of the time. The wonder is I get anything made at all the number of stupid things I do.

To be fair there’s a lot of red in those locations as well, but I know what you’re saying. Hurlbut calls it a ‘creamy’ and having shot on the Zeiss lenses I have noticed a more clinical representation of the image. It’s also down to the white balance as well of course. Grading will be very interesting I’m sure, as it always is. Normally we do a one light grade to even out the images then work from there, but you don’t have a huge amount of room to move with DSLR footage so we’re going to have to be quite careful about protecting our image. It’s all low budget though so we have to take the rough with the smooth. The 5D is great but it’s no miracle worker, at least not yet anyway!
